Day 6 of 25 Recipes of Christmas: Cut Out Cookies

Here is my family’s version of cut out cookies. This is the only time I ever make cut out cookies. Coincidentally, it is also the only time of year that I use swear words. I don’t get along too well with this type of cookie. I’m too impatient and try to be too perfect. Since my kids are older now, I’ve handed this tradition over to them to do and I stay out of the kitchen. The recipe is not difficult. In fact, I’ve tried many sugar cookie recipes and have the same results whenever I use cookie cutters. The problem lies with ME.

Cut Out Cookies

2 cups sugar
3 eggs
1/2 cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
3/4 cup shortening
1 dash nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon salt
5 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
ICING:
1 pound confectioner’s sugar
1/2 stick margarine
1 teaspoon vanilla
3 ounces cream cheese — softened
1 teaspoon milk

Mix together sugar, eggs, milk, vanilla, shortening, nutmeg and salt. Add flour, baking soda and baking powder.

Roll out dough to 1/4″ thickness and cut out with cookie cutters.

Bake at 350 degrees for 6-8 minutes.

Cool and ice.

ICING:
Mix together ingredients and color with paste food coloring.
